History of the Bukhara State Medical Institute named after Abu Ali ibn Sino

The history of the Bukhara State Medical Institute is a mirror of the history of the country, the formation of health care not only in the Bukhara region, but also throughout Uzbekistan.

Bukhara State Medical Institute was founded on the eve of the Independence Day of the Republic of Uzbekistan on September 6, 1990 with Resolution 307 of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan. According to the decision of the Presidium of the Bukhara Regional Council of People’s Deputies, in March 1991, the institute was given the name of the great ancestor Abu Ali ibn Sino. The government, the Ministry of Health and the administration of the Bukhara region have taken steps to create all favorable conditions for students studying at the institute.

The Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan and the khokimiyat of the Bukhara region paid special attention to the employees of the institute with specialization, organizational and leadership skills and provided the institute with the best building in the regional center. Scientists and specialists actively participated in providing the institute with the necessary educational equipment and literature, teaching aids and textbooks. Particular attention was paid to strengthening the material and technical base of the institute, expanding and improving the staff of leading employees.

In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 1052 dated October 11, 1990, Honored Scientist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor AkramIbragimovichMuminov was appointed the first rector of the Bukhara State Medical Institute.

On August 31, 1991, the opening ceremony of the institute took place. It was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Republic, heads of khokimiyats, the public, students, parents. Deputy Chairman of the Regional Executive Committee I.M. Mukhammedova, the manager of the Gazpromstroy trust B. Khafizov handed the symbolic key to A.M. Muminov.

On September 2, 1991, 412 first-year students at the institute took the oath of allegiance to Abu Ali ibn Sino, the great healer, in Afshan, in his homeland. The event was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Health R.T. Sultanov, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan U. Oripov, professor K.N. Nasriddinov and other scientists, intellectuals and the general public.

In September 1992-1993, the number of departments was 24.

In 1995-1996, the rector of the institute was the doctor of medical sciences, professorOmirovRaufYuldashevich, who made a worthy contribution to the improvement of teaching and educational work at the institute.

Leadership initiative is essential in the widespread organization of the educational institution. Vice-rector for administrative and economic issues H.S. Gaffarov, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Sh.T. Salimov, Vice-Rector for Economics and Capital Construction U. Asadov, Vice-Rector for Medical Affairs B.K. Rasulov actively participated in the organizational issues of the alma mater.

In 1996, the rector of the institute was appointed vice-rector for research, head of the department “Faculty and hospital surgery”, MD, professorRakhmatMakhmudovichAkhmedov, effectively worked until April 2012. Professor R.M. Akhmedov actively contributed to the further development of the institute. The institute continued to work, preserving the traditions laid down by its founder, new departments were opened, great attention was paid to scientific research. Under the leadership of Professor RakhmatMakhmudovichAkhmedov, the staff of the institute defended more than 10 candidate and doctoral dissertations.

In 2012, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor TokhirAskarovichAskarov was appointed rector. During this period, in the 2013-2014 academic years, a magistracy was opened in four areas. In 2016, one doctoral dissertation was defended, more than 10 international conferences were held. 12 inventions were received. 13 innovative, innovative and institutional projects were created in the field of science, education and production, and eight contracts were created with 18 joint scientific conferences: 15 of them with the participation of foreign scientists and were held at a high level.

In 1991, in our country, only one direction of medical education was taught, and then highly qualified specialists were trained in four areas of education. In 1991, the institute trained specialists in the direction of “General Medicine”. In the 1992-1993 academic years, the Faculty of Dentistry began its work, and in 1999 the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Higher Nursing opened in accordance with the Decree of the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan I. Karimov. In 2001, the direction of medical and pedagogical activity was opened. Since 2016, the training of highly qualified doctors began, trained in all areas.

Time required new qualifications from future physicians, in this regard; the paediatric faculty was opened in 2016.

Currently, the institute has 905 students at the Faculty of General Medicine and Paediatrics, 433 students at the Faculty of Dentistry, and 191 in the medical and pedagogical direction, 132 highly qualified nurses study not only from the Bukhara region, but also from other regions of the Republic, even from neighbouring countries., in particular from the Russian Federation and the Republics of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan.

Currently, the number of departments in the institute is 26, which are attached to the faculties. More than 200 professors and teachers work in these departments, who annually undergo training in republican and foreign scientific centres at least once every 3 years.

Doctors who graduated from the institute are successfully working not only in Uzbekistan, but also as doctors in the USA, Israel and other countries such as the CIS, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Innovative pedagogical technologies have been introduced into the educational process of the institute. In addition, to develop students’ practical skills in various clinical situations, the objective clinical trial (OSSE) methodology was introduced, which is designed to develop practical skills in medical practice. The institute has created more than 2600 multimedia programs, including lectures, and are widely used in practical training. One of the first in our institute was opened a “distance learning centre”. Thanks to this system, videoconferences were held with other higher education institutions.

The general book fund of the Information Resource Centre (CIR) is more than 8 725 copies. Most of them are textbooks and tutorials. In addition, several editions of foreign medical and scientific journals are regularly collected for the CIR Foundation. The CIR has about 10,000 textbooks and teaching aids published in foreign countries.

The CIR electronic library contains more than 6225 electronic educational materials. There are electronic textbooks, electronic versions of textbooks, multimedia, lecture texts, educational and methodological complexes. The online library is connected to the Internet and all customers have access to the Ziyonet portal.

Over the past 27 years, professors and teachers of the institute have published more than 70 textbooks and teaching aids approved by secondary and higher educational institutions and the Ministry of Health. These textbooks are used in medical schools and medical colleges throughout the country. Professors have published monographs on various topics, and their articles and abstracts are published not only in Uzbekistan, but also in foreign scientific medical journals and collections.

Spiritual and educational work at the institute serves important goals and objectives of training highly qualified specialists with a modern worldview. The upbringing of the young generation based on national and universal values, as well as training highly qualified specialists on the path of creating a legal democratic and civil society and strengthening their immunity against foreign influences is the cornerstone of the large-scale activities of spiritual education at the institute. Currently, there are regularly functioning clubs from 8 sports.

Since June 2017 BukhGMI is headed by Professor of the Department of Surgical Dentistry, Doctor of Medical Sciences InoyatovAmrilloShodievich. The quality training of scientific and pedagogical personnel continues to improve. Since 2017, the institute has been actively developing internal and external academic mobility of the teaching staff and students (students, undergraduates, PhD, DSc doctoral students).

The Institute maintains international relations with universities and research centres of the near and far abroad. The partnership is carried out with 120 universities, clinics, research centres from 25 countries.

Today, the institute has implemented a multilevel structure of continuous training of medical personnel. It includes a canter for advanced training and professional retraining of pedagogical personnel of secondary specialized education, the faculty of retraining and advanced training of general practitioners, an advanced training course and the issuance of medical categories for doctors of private medical institutions, according to the order of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 426 dated July 31, 2017 of the year.

The teaching staffs of the institute are introducing new advanced technologies for teaching and monitoring students’ knowledge, simulation technologies, improving the material and technical base of the departments of the university. More than two thousand students are taught in the state, Russian and English languages.

The infrastructure of the institute allows obtaining conditions for education in accordance with the most modern requirements and conducting scientific research and includes three educational buildings with classrooms equipped with interactive equipment, a scientific library with reading and multimedia rooms, an educational and clinical (training) canter with high-tech simulators and mannequins, dormitory, 16 clinical bases of departments. For professional practice of students, contracts have been concluded with 96 clinical bases located in all regions of Uzbekistan, as well as in the near and far abroad.

And, today the Bukhara State Medical Institute named after Abu Ali ibn Sino continues to write its history of the traditions of high-quality teaching, the union of education, science and practice, international recognition, continuous improvement of the training of specialists in accordance with the requirements of modern society.

Hostel Information

The student dormitory at the Bukhara State Medical Institute is located at 42 K.
