The Dhaka National Medical College inherits her glorious predecessor the Dhaka National Medical Institute, which was established in 1925 as a part of Non-cooperation movement of the Indian Sub-continent against the British colonial rule, organized jointly by the Indian National Congress and the Indian Muslim League under the Leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Mawlana Muhammad Ali and Mawlana Sawkat Ali.
Governing Body of the college is formed by the University of Dhaka for overall management of the College. Now Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Arslan is the Chairman of the present governing body of the college. Under his direct leadership the master plan of the vision to build up the digital Bangladesh of SK Hasina is in progress. Dhaka National Medical College offers 6 years MBBS course approved by the Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council, leading to MBBS degree of the University of Dhaka and one year internship training at Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital.
Recent developments of College & Hospital are Valuable land expansion to build up two new student Hostel, One nursing institute will also be established, Vertical extension of the academic building according to the recognized plan has been completed, Extension of clinical activities by opening the new building, Opening of new Department like Dental Unit, Intervention Cardiology (CathLab), Neuro-Medicine, Gastroenterology and Endocrinology with well equipment’s and efficient man power, Improvement and expansion of Laboratory medicine, Radiology and Imaging, Uninterrupted power supply by modern automated generator system both in Hospital and College for 24 hours, Central AC service is ensured in college building as a construction plan, New two lift in Hospital building is added and one new lift is already installed, To ensure the patients care, Fast-track consultant services is started.
The campus of the college is located at 53/1, Johnson Road, Dhaka – 1100; in the heart of old part of the Dhaka City near Bahadur Shah Park and opposite to Dhaka Judges Court of the historical on a 2,308 Acre land. Many educational institutes like Jagannath University, Dhaka Collegiate School, KabiNazrul Islam Govt. College, Mahanagar Mohila College, St. Gregory School, Govt. Muslim High School, Banglabazar Govt. Girl’s School, Paukage School are around the college.
At present 11 storied building with 14000 sqft. Floor space in each floor. Total floor space 154000 sqft. With centrally air conditioned and 24 hours lift services. The college building has administrative sections, 8 departments, library, 5 lecture galleries, large examination hall, one conference room, one seminar room, one teachers lounge, and male & female student’s common rooms.
The library has a collection of over 5000 bound Volume of text books, references and journals in various subjects and provides up to date information to the students & teachers. It has user – friendly access system. The Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital is the designated teaching hospital of the college. It has a 650 bedded multidisciplinary hospital complex adjacent to the academic building.
